10 things I do/don’t want to see on Saturday…
10. I am putting this one first, I DO want to see Utah and TCU win. I think it will bring more positive attention to the conference and it will set those games up to be “must watches.” It could also continue to shake up the top 25 and help the stars align to get us another national title….. I didn’t stutter.
9. I DON’T want to see anyone get injured. Injuries are something BYU has avoided in recent years and can hopefully continue to avoid. We need to get up early, sub guys in, keep everyone healthy.
8. I DO want to see more turnovers caused by our defense’s physical play. Fumbles don’t just happen, they are forced, whether it’s a big hit, stripping the ball, or knocking the ball out of the quarterback’s hands. Early turnovers last week helped us create emotion and momentum, as well as a short field.
7. I DO want to see some new marines in the endzone doing push-ups. I know the guys from last week are tired, so lets get some fresh pecks in there. You know those guys hated the second quarter of last week’s game. Those noses weren’t getting all the way to the ground and I saw a few military butts in the air. We will cut you some slack just this once.
6. I DON’T want to give the player of the game award out to the other team’s training staff. The last two weeks the training staff from our opponents have been crazy busy, carrying guys off the field, taping ankles, bringing water/towels. Let’s give all the Wyoming players a shot of pickle juicie, and keep their trainers off the field. UCLA’s training staff were the leading Bruin rushers on Saturday.
5. I DO want to see another sold out stadium. There are few things as exhilarating as playing in front of 65,000, when you can’t hear your coach yelling at you and your ears take a minute to adjust when you go into the locker-room. The eruption of cheers after a great play, the high fives, the chest bumps, booing the refs, I love it all. If you don’t have a ticket, get one. I have a feeling people will be talking about this season for years to come.
4. I DON’T want to see stupid penalties that end up killing drives. It is the worst thing to see your offense driving down the field and then have mental lapses, jumping offsides or whatever. Lets play clean, smart, mistake-free football. Besides, you’ll hate it when Coach Mendenhall shows the powerpoint slide in the team meeting where all the penalties and yardages are added up and you were a major contributor.
3. I DO want to see someone with a little ability go out and kick the stupid ball through the uprights and win the grand prize sack of cash. Come on…it’s a twenty yard field goal! Lets strap it up a little tighter and do the darn thing.
2. I DON’T want to hear the popcorn popping song. It was one of the worst moments of every game when the maestro would strike the band up and play a Sunday School song. I haven’t heard it thus far, so lets keep the streak alive and stick to the Star Wars song. It’s the lesser of two evils.
1. I DO want to see the Lavell Edwards Stadium winning streak live on. It is a very impressive record that dates back to 2006. We, as a team, heard Coach Edwards tell us how important it is to win games at home. He told us that if you do nothing else with your season just make sure you are winning the games at home.
Friday morning I will have the Wyoming scouting report up, then it’s down to business on Saturday. I hope you have your ticket!

They played Popcorn Popping last week. I hate that song too.
I would really like to hear the band play Carmina Burana (sp) at the start of games. It is a great anticipation song and satisfies the music snobs.
Best line of the post…..”UCLA’s training staff were the leading Bruin rushers on Saturday.”
One of those military “guys” was a gal last week! She even kept up in the second quarter. Good for her!!
Do they really have you drink pickle juice?
And I have my ticket and will be in my seat! Go Cougs!
You don’t like the star wars song Gooch? I never like the Popcorn popping song but the band has gotta play SOMEthing and Star Wars is cool – no matter what anybody says.
Quinn,
The joke about the UCLA training staff being the leading rusher was hilarious. I agree with all your points. You should get a radio gig going. You would trump all the losers who make up Utah sports radio.
Yeah, I heard Popcorn popping for the first time in about a year last Saturday. I immediately started booing as did just about everyone around me. I think the band really needs to stop playing that song immediately. A very small minority of people enjoy it, and 75% of them are in the band. It’s not that I don’t want the band to have their fun… I think the goofy Star Wars tradition is kind of cool and unique… but Popcorn Popping has run its course and must end.
I absolutely love it when they play Popcorn Popping.
If nothing else, for the sole fact that it pisses off so many people, and I very much enjoy the irritation factor.
Amen, Brandon.
I’m sure you meant Lavell Edwards Stadium. The field hasn’t been named yet. Give it a few years, though, and I’m sure we’ll have Bronco Mendenhall field at Lavell Edwards Stadium!
I actually have no feelings one way or the other for the Popcorn Popping song. But I do have season tickets and love going to every game. I love the feeling and excitement around me. I sit right behind the players, which adds another level of excitement. Just seeing them pumped up, gets me pumped up!
I’m glad we’re picking on the songs the band plays instead of how BYU dropped a close one again with UCLA. Ha, ha, I’ve watched that game 3 times now, it’s still sweet.
Gooch, I know we’re on Wyoming right now, but I’d like to know what it’s like for the palyers to play Utah. There is always serious smack all year long with the fans… how do the players handle such a huge rivalry?
That stupid pop corn song needs to go. Why is it played at a football game? Pathetic, whoever thought of playing it in the first place should be fired or go teach primary……that way they can hear it every week.
When I was a child . . . the Popcorn song?
It’s time for the BYU band to grow up. And no, it really isn’t that cute when played at LES, but it does irritate a lot of people. So, if that’s what the band is trying to accomplish, congratulations BYU band, you have scored!
Popcorn bothers someone??? What boobs and whiners. Please double the playing of Popcorn and everyone start popping up. What puffinjays. What supercilious twits. Bunch of cowgirls.
I’d like to hear the hard-hitting parts of “Locomotive Breath” by Jethro Tull. Yeah, It has a great rift that are actually better than “Sirius,” the Alan Parson’s song first used as an intro by the Chicago Bulls then ripped off by other NBA and college teams, including the Utah Jazz.
Gee, that makes me think. Why haven’t other teams copied “Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree?”
Great article furnishing a few laughs. When I am at the game, I am into the game not what the band is playing; who cares? In the north endzone seats it is not so loud. I saw the game live and have watched it twice more on my DVR. I believe that the BYU conditioning program should be commended since our opponents seem to have lots more injuries. Go Cougs!!
Okay – you are all talking about the popcorn song – but did any of you recognize the band playing the school song at the end of the game??? My husband and I were the only ones who stopped and stood at attention to sing. No, it isn’t “Rise and Shout!” I am appauled that no one knows our alma mater! Not only the words, but the tune!!! Shame, shame, shame.
Popcorn Popping is only played at the end of victories. So the more we hear the song, the more we win. I’ll gladly suffer through a song that signifies victory.
I 2nd the nomination for Gooch as our new Utah sports talk radio host. Hans Olsen is okay, and every other guy on the air sucks something awful (Wrubel not included, obviously).
And I too am embarrassed to hear “Popcorn Popping” at a football game. Good song, wrong place, wrong time.
I don’t get that hate for popcorn popping. I don’t like it either – but the level of dislike is kind of odd.
