2008 Football Captains…

26 August 2008 Quinn Gooch 5 Comments

Here are my .02 cents about the football captains:

Travis Bright- Possible the largest man alive.  He is by far the most physical player on the team, and possible the dirtiest player.  He has been known to hit certain middle linebackers way late and for zero reason, but you didn’t hear that from me.  Ask Kelly Poppinga, I’m sure he has  a few good stories, if he can remember them.  As far as Travis as a captain, great choice.  He is a guy that will lead by action.  Plus when you walk out for the coin toss you always need a guy that can intimidate.  I never wanted to get in Travis’s way on the field and will still approach him at an unseen angle.

Max Hall- He’s the quarterback, isn’t it just the natural order.  Although, he definately is a leader.  He has been in the foreground the moment he walked on the campus.  One thing he is good at is making the players around him believe in what he can do and beleive in their abilities.  From a defensive player that played against him, he’s good and he will tell you just how good he is.  Humility is not his strong point, but as long as you produce no one cares.  He will be the chirpy leader that yells and claps.  Every team needs one of those guys.  As a captain good choice, enough said.

Jan Jorgensen- The janimal is also a great choice.  He has been a strong leader on the defensive side of the ball since last year, and he has been the leader of his position group for just as long.  He is a work hoarse in the weight-room and at practice.  He has always been a top producer on the field and is on track to have another great year.  As a leader they couldn’t have picked a better guy, both for on the field and off the field.

David Nixon- Dave is the guy on the team that has seen it all, and been around forever.  He survived the Crowton years and was a stand-out as a Freshman.  He Came back from his mission and started right where he left off.  Most of you don’t know that he played last year after being injured all summer.  We thought he wouldn’t recover from his summer surgery in time.  Dave didn’t lift or workout until the first day of camp.  He battled his body through camp and started every game, the kid is super tough.  He is the quintessential Texas football player.  Leader, yes and he carries the largest role out of the four captain. Max will be in the lime light, Travis will back him up and enforce, Jan will produce and be a winner and Dave needs to inspire and encourage the inexperienced player throughout the season.

All together the captain are exactly who they should be.  All of them are great examples of the team.  Most of all I believe they will be the players making plays on Saturday.  (Except for Travis)  For me that is one of the most important aspects of being a leader.  When Saturday rolls around the leader need to be the guys making the plays, and showing the rest of the team how it’s done.  In past years some captains have not achieved this aspect of being voted a captain.  They did the yelling and chest dumping but none of that translated onto the field.

Quinn we are going to miss watching you on the field this year, but it sure is fun to read your deep thoughts, and insightful analysis of the BYU football program. Go Cougs!

I’m loving the blog, Quinn. I can’t wait to read more of your takes on the football team, seeings how you know them all.

I’m particularly intrigued by Max Hall and his reported “cockiness.” As someone who also can’t keep his mouth shut, I appreciate that kind of attitude. And, if I inferred correctly from your words, it seems his chirpiness gets under the skin of the defense. Always a good thing.

I also just want to say Travis Bright is the freaking man. It’s not often that I really get behind an offensive lineman, but Bright is one of my very favorite players on the team. I can’t wait to see him pull and become the lead blocker for Harvey Unga again this year. I don’t know what that play is called exactly but it’s always fun to see big Bright just blow up linebackers.

One more thing- how’s the leg? I just had ACL surgery myself a few weeks ago. I know your pain, man.

The leg is good, I recently purchased a bike and I ride to work every day. It has helped a lot and my strength is almost back to where is was.
And yes Max did get under our skin, and Travis is a special talent. The play you are referring to is called a trap or sweep, depending on where the hole forms. (Trap is an inside play, Sweep is an outside play)

Quinn, you know who this is don’t you. I like the blog, you have a unique point of view. But you can consider me the voice of reason. Blood is thicker than water, so the last few years were hard for me. Do I want them to win, do I want them to lose? However, now that you have moved on, I can move on as well.

quinn, do you know how wore those numbers? (isn’t that sad i was told what number to wear, and had no say in the change?)
anyway, dgooch14 hit it on the head about your unique take on the team. i wonder how many other former players blog about the team? its funny how far from the truth some writers can be because they are always writing from the outside in. true byu fans should flock to this site like bees on honey if you keep the quality up. here is a question i think you should address: what is the difference between coach mendenhal and coach crowton? how did mendenhal right the ship? poeple ask me that all the time. oh and about doug, his comments should be so amusing.
