Mountain West Conf. »
This is just a little soap box rant, but I am tired of the Mountain West being categorized as a sub par conference. Year after year we have at least 2-3 teams vying for a top 25 spot and yet BCS conferences look down their noses at us. How many times do BYU, Utah and TCU need to prove that the MWC doesn’t belong grouped with the likes of the Sun Belt, WAC, MAC and USA conferences. Our institutions don’t compete like “one of the rest” so why the classification as …

One thing that BYU is recieving this year is a lot of national pub. With feature articles on espn’s and sports illustrated’s websites, plus national news papers like USA Today. All this pub boads well for the promotion as the odds favorite to bust the BCS. But don’t go to far, cougars beware. Just as Coach Mendenhall states in the SI article all this promotion can do wonders for the cougars if they preform early and win against the BCS conference teams. A stumble early could spell disaster, as we all …
Coaching staff, Tradition »
The last two a day is a great day for a couple of reasons. The most obvious, is you only have to complete one practice a day. Second, and the best reason for camp being over, is the fact that you can know start to prepare for the real games. Playing against your own guys gets tiring and boring. After a while the offensive script start to repeat itself, and you find yourself cheating. It’s always great to get the notebook for the first game and get your first look …

Having played with a number of players on the current squad, I am particularly eager to see some of the current cougars in action.
Vic So’oto- The kid has all of the intangibles to be a great outside linebacker. There will be a learning curve involved, but I am hoping that the staff can bring him along quickly. He has potential to be a great defensive player.
JJ Di Luigi- He came out of high school with a lot of hype, but promptly became one of the walking wounded. He has the knack …

The answer is no! College players are always competing for the coach’s eye. It is very hard to slow down or take it easy because you have to stand out or you can get left standing on the sideline. Fights happen at practice because there are a great number of inflated ego’s on the field at the same time. Add the pressure of trying to look good and leave and impression and it has all the ingredients of a good old brew-haha. Coach, fights happen. Yeah you don’t like to …

For those wondering what the pursuit drill is, allow me to enlighten. It is a brutal period of practice where the defensive squad must run like wild dogs from the sideline to their respective positions and then wait for Coach Mendenhall to call out a play.
The players must make the correct calls, depending on the formation, and execute the play to perfection. Perfection is gauged by the players effort and movements. If someone decides to take a play off or run at 85-90% the whole sequence in repeated, and repeated …

While being injured is one of the most frustrating things in the world, let step back and look at the positives. With Collie, Sorenson and Fui being injured young players are getting the opportunity to step into fall camp and contribute. This gives young players the ability to develop the skills needed for the 13 game season. While it is hard to watch those highly productive and experienced players peddle the stationary bikes, it gives them a chance to heal. Experienced players will understand that sometimes the best thing you need is to …
