Former Cougars, On the Road »

[26 Sep 2008 | 23 Comments | ]

I have been thinking about this game for a while now, mostly remembering all the emotions I felt during it….and well, the wound hasn’t healed. What makes remembering this game even worse is the fact that the offense was playing good football, and the defense just couldn’t stop a thing. As stupid as it may sound, the analogy of quicksand from The Replacements is a fitting description of this game. The defense just kept struggling and struggling but couldn’t get out and ended up deeper under ground.
If you asked Coach …

With the mighty Trojans losing to the Oregon State Beavers, how will the top 25 rankings be affected? Well, the Cougars will be moving on up in the standings. It will most likely only be one spot, but when was the last time the Cougars have been in the top ten this early in the season?

I was snooping around on the internet and came across the only fan blog for the Utah State Aggies and I found one of the single most inspiring quotes I have ever read.
After USU’s incredible victory of the Univeristy of Idaho, Brent Guy lets us know how he fired his boys up before the game.

This video is of Penn State’s stadium when they do a white-out. Each fan wears white and they also have a white towel that they wave during the introduction and game. It looks amazing and shows the fans loyalty and dedication to supporting the team. It would be hard to pull off, but could we?
We would need to first organize 64,000 small blue towels, and then we would have to hand them out somewhere outside of the stadium. BYU doesn’t allow anyone to interfere with people getting to the

Crowton’s head coaching years have been talked about and analyzed by everyone under the sun. Everyone has their own opinion about his coaching abilities, both good and bad. My experiences during these years varied, but I noticed significant differences in the way the program operated during the Crowton years as opposed to the Mendenhall era. In this first installment, I want to discuss the developmental aspects of the program also known as the weight-training.

Oh, Canada….they are getting creative up in the Great White North. TO and OCHO need to start brainstorming some new celebrations. In the natural progression of things, what would be next? Tag, a quick game of dodge ball, four square….no, no, no…the snow man song. My little boy would dig that one.
Come on guys, can’t we just keep it simple? Maybe a Winnipeg leap… except you’ll get tired running 20 yards through the endzone and then searching for some fans. The officials needed to throw a flag and take some of …

July 24th – training camp…
“If the NFL Scouting Combine is a ‘wretched place’, then I guess training camp is a horrid place.  I don’t know, maybe its not that bad – but it certainly does make for a better story.
Anyway, I arrived in Albany, NY for training camp on Wednesday, July 23rd, the day before we had to report.  I had heard so much about ‘camp’ I actually didn’t really know what to expect – some guys said, “it’ll be the worst month of your life,” while others claimed, ‘ah, …

BYUJACK, made some great observations in an earlier Wyoming game comment. I would like to clear up some of the questions that he had about our coverages against Wyoming.
It wasn’t that we were playing more man-to-man, because we very rarely play man-to-man coverage. We did play a coverage that is designed to put nine men in the box to stop the run. The free safety and strong safety are both added to the run support. (That is why the corners appeared to be playing so deep.) The coverage calls for the corners to play …

This quote comes to you courtesy of Bronco during a heated practice session. There had been a couple fights during practice and one of our large linemen was throwing some late punches, which Bronco doesn’t endorse. The player quickly found himself confronted with an angry Coach Mendenhall, but the fireworks didn’t end there.  The very large player had the audacity to talk back to Coach Mendenhall, who quickly responded with this priceless gem, “Shut your mouth when you’re talking to me.”
Not many players caught it, but those that did had a …

I wanted to let everyone know what they can expect from me this week.  The bye will allow me to catch my breath and address a few things from the programs past. During game weeks, I am trying to concentrate on the upcoming opponent and I don’t get to discuss the program as much as I would like to.  I am going to use this week to talk about the following:

To understand whether a bye week is needed let’s look at what we do during the bye week.  Monday, the players will go through all of their normal meetings, and then hit the field for a very short practice that will consist of mostly individual position specific drill.  This practice is used to get back to the fundamentals that sometimes are forgotten as we prepare for specific opponents.
Tuesday, the practice will again be short, but will have more time allocated to the team, than individual work.  The team will have …

This is a hush-hush post that only about twenty people know about.  So lucky for all of you, I was one of the twenty that got in on the meeting. After Coach Crowton was asked to resign and before Coach Whittingham was offered the job as the head coach for BYU, about fifteen players got together and stole a few minutes from Tom Holmoe’s day. We went up to the Athletic Directors office and we told him how strongly we felt about Coach Mendenhall becoming the Head Coach. It wasn’t …
