BCS, Rankings »

[22 Sep 2008 | 10 Comments | ]

I was just shuffling through a Sports Illustrated and I started thinking about the teams that I would like to play in the BCS game. On the flip side, what teams would the Cougars rather not play when all eyes are on the Cougars. Let’s explore these teams…
Team I would like to play, in no particular order:

Florida- yes, please. Urban Meyer and his mighty Gators.  They would present some tough challenges for our defense but I think we could scheme a way to keep the ball out of Tebow’s hands. …

If he goes there will be trouble and if he stays there will be….another national championship. (I am not just hoping and wishing, lightning will strike again.  Tyrone, will be turning in his coaching carriers grave.) It’s no secret to any BYU fan that Bronco has alluded to leaving after 5 years.  I think I’ve heard it more than once out of his mouth.  I’ve also heard that he believes he will not be like Lavell and coach at BYU for his entire career.  Or would he? I …

Yes, I too, am keeping a close eye on the Utes as the season progresses.  To a true blue Cougar fan, all of these “other” games pale in comparison to the Utah game to be held in November.  Yeah…it’s nice to beat Wyoming, New Mexico and TCU.  Even the UCLA win was nice, but all of those wins won’t be the win everyone talks about for the next ten years.  Beating the Utes will be what everyone remembers and reminisces about.
So here is a little sampler, as we …

The game just felt like business as usual.
How did I do?

The teams in our conference rarely surprise me. Defense was Wyoming’s strong point, but they could only hang for the first quarter and then it was all down hill. Their defense did play more zone, which made sense with the success we have had against man to man match-ups. The problem with playing zone is there are always soft spots and Max is good enough to exploit those openings and move the chains. For Wyoming, the Cougars …

We got the interception I was looking for.  Brandan Bradely knocked the ball up in the air and David Nixon reeled it in and took it down the field for a touchdown.
The offense was very efficient in marching down the field for score after score.  I just heard it was BYU’s 9th consecutive sell out, with just over 64,000.  Max and the starters were taken out with 4 minutes left in the third quarter so it will be the second week in a row that the back-ups get to play.

Offense
We started out a little slow but as the second quarter progressed our play improved and we were able to move the ball well.  This game feels a little more like business as usual.  Austin has two TD catches, and Harvey has one rushing TD.
The Pokes are playing more zone than usual and I would think that one of their adjustments would be to man the corners up and give Austin’s guy some help with the safety.  Wyoming’s defense would then be able to bring more pressure and hopefully be …

The Cougars are up seven nothing because of a defensive touchdown.  The offense needs to return to running the ball and softening up Wyomings front seven.  Wyomings defense is playing well, while Max shows signs of inaccuracy.  The offense has also dropped a few balls which has stopped drives from progressing.
Wyoming’s offense continues to work the weak side out, where they know we are playing softer coverage.  We are also playing more nickel defense on 2nd and 3rd and long.
The quarter was not that fun to watch.

I am all for this young man deciding to come to BYU, but it’s time to look at this objectively just to make sure we aren’t jumping down this young man’s throat.
He has narrowed his list down to 5 school: BYU, USC, UCLA and Stanford.  Let’s all look at each school, what they have to offer and let’s come to a sensible decision.

UCLA- Norm Chow has a huge connection to Punahou and also shares the same LDS beliefs.  Yet he is a defensive player and won’t be around Chow.  He’ll be …

Coach Mendenhall has said time and time again that the most important thing in life is not football. He’s also wise enough to see that the only way that we will get enough publicity to get people interested in the Church is by winning football games. Coach has talked to the team on numerous occasions about the importance of playing from a different place so that when others watch us play football they will notice something different about us, then upon further inquiry we will be able to speak about how …

Devin Moore is Wyomings best player and a guy that can change the momentum of the game with one touch of the ball. Our defense will have to do a great job of bottling him up and keeping the run lanes closed. I’ve played against him a few times and he has a great burst of speed and hits the hole running low and hard. One thing our defense will have to do better is control the cut back lanes and the back side of the running plays. Players with Devin’s kind of …

10.  I am putting this one first, I DO want to see Utah and TCU win.  I think it will bring more positive attention to the conference and it will set those games up to be “must watches.”  It could also continue to shake up the top 25 and help the stars align to get us another national title….. I didn’t stutter.
9.  I DON’T want to see anyone get injured.  Injuries are something BYU has avoided in recent years and can hopefully continue to avoid.  We need to get up …

If you didn’t hear the radio show, you missed out.  Mr. Jim Rome had Coach Mendenhall on his show at 11:00 AM our time.  The show went extremely well. Rome even commented that he never has a guest on for so long, but he was so interested in hearing more of what Coach Mendenhall had to say that he kept him longer than normal.
One thing that I found very interesting was that he talked about BYU’s peculiar recruiting process and how he prefers to recruit players with a solid character, not just …
