A couple UNLV look-a-likes…

22 October 2008 Quinn Gooch 12 Comments

What would we do without the internet? My posts this week have been very serious and if there is one thing we all need -Paul Jones- it’s a little laughter. Enjoy.

Do you all remember your favorite character from Nacho Libre? He was round and lent Nacho his stretchy pants. Yes, our good friend Cancho. Well he has grown up, grew a mustache and is now a bowling ball of a running back.

For more Frank Summers check out his video blog on the MTN website

I also dug around and found Coach Sanford’s long lost twin. He’s a whacky Britt that stars in slap-stick comedies. Mr. Bean!!

    Quinn,

What’s the most effective way for smaller defensive backs to bring down a big man like Summers? I suppose our DB’s will see quite a bit of him Saturday.

Summers is tough because not only is he thick, but he is low to the ground. If you try and take out his knees/legs you can often end up missing. He forces the defensive players to get so low that he side steps you. It is also hard to tackle him high because he has enough power to run you over -alla Quinton Ganther.
You have to approach him from a good angle and catch him before he gets going North and South. If you get there late and he has you in his sights you basically have to take on for the team. Hoping you will remember your name in the morning.
My preference would be hitting him low, but square so he trips over your entire body.
To this day the worst Rback I ever had to tackle was Stewart from Oregon. That guys legs were huge.

Chancho, let me borrow your sweeeeaaaats!

    Are you leabing us Ignacio?

No Chancho, I would neber leab you.

One of my fav movies, classic.

The biggest test in my ind has passed us and that was Ferguson. Ferguson was not only big and thick but he had some momentum coming with him after just a few steps. Summers is not really that big of a deal if there is contact made behind the line of scrimmage or if, like Quinn says, he has to bounce outside. Open field…bring whatever you got and don’t be ashamed if you end up on your back…just don’t miss the tackle.

The key to stopping Summers and the UNLV run game will be penetration to make him bounce and run lateral. It takes him a while to get up to top speed.

    A MESSAGE TO ALL…

Since this is the most recent blog I will make this announcement here. There have been a few Ute fans on here that just want to jibber jabber about whatever makes them sleep well at night. The best thing baout this blog so far is that it has been intelligent conversation about topics of real interest and real meaning. It has not, thus far, become meaningless chat room rubbish. If people from other teams want to come on here and say their peace, just ask yourself, “Why are they so interested in a team they hate?” and then ignore them.

Bottom line, if you want to argue with less intelligent chat roomers there are plenty of boards out there to post on. Let’s try and nip this in the butt right from the start and commit to keeping this blog reserved for Cougars and relevent topics.

Disclaimer: This opinion may or may not reflect Quinn’s. I just feel that this is the best Cougar update resource we have and I don’t want it to get ruined with filth.

I’m looking forward to seeing Thor Pili get ran over by Fui once and Feinga twice. Of course anyone else that wants to put a good lick on this guy would be great for me too.

I remember that guy getting recruited and he was just “too good” to go to BYU so he went Pac-10 and Oregon. Somehow he ended up at UNLV. “Way to go Thor” His brother was such a great guy… I just hope he doesn’t get anyplace near Max.

    Quinn-

Stewart may have had thick legs…but stop him you (and the rest) did!
Ah, THAT was a great day! Maybe my favorite moment of my sports life-being in that stadium for that win! (LV Bowl ‘06) Thank you for the great memory!

Posting look -a-likes and Nacho Libre talk is relevent and intelligent conversation? LOL

Funny thing about Thor Pili, (at least I am pretty sure it is the same guy, in any case, it’s really funny)

After the shalacking of Oregon in the Vegas Bowl I went on a family vacation with the In-laws (Becks) to Hawaii. On our flight home John, Andrew and I sat next to a big poly that was head to tow in Oregon stuff. We of course were sporting a few BYU items.

I asked him if he played for Oregon and he said no but he was getting recruited by them and that his cousin played there.

I asked (drooling at the thought of having this boheameth in front of me taking up blockers) who else was recruiting him. He said it was between BYU and Oregon.

I asked him if he watched the Vegas Bowl. And he said he was at the game. And after watching the game from their sideline he chose Oregon. “Did you noticed that we pretty much left them with their tails between their legs?” Don’t you want to go to the better school?”

I wished him luck and turned away. I think it was all the “EXTRA” Nike stuff that Oregon gets that led him away…in any case, no matter where he went they have not been more successful than BYU since that day. I am pretty confident he made a poor decision.

    Good find Jim,
You aren’t the first person that has made the comparison. I guess Coach Sanford and I are Europeans at heart.
Man I look odd in that Banquet picture.

Summers is a very hard back for a lot of defenses to deal with, but I think he’s perfect for BYU to negate. We’re more of a strong team than we are a fast team. A guy like Summers is hard to miss.
