A few Top-10’s for your Wednesday morning enjoyment.

Things to be excited about if you’re a Cougar:
1. Las Vegas doesn’t have ten inches of snow on the ground.
2. The JW Marriot hotel is spectacular.
3. You get a free Wii and some extra per diem cash to spend on holiday gift.
4. At least you get another game to erase the Utah loss out of your mind. That’s more then the 2004 team received after their loss to the U.
5. Call me crazy, but Vegas is way better then Boise and Albuquerque. If a couple of those late game winning stops/scores went the other way it would have been a different –much colder- type of disappointment.
6. The Cougars know the routine. The ESPN zone, Outback Bowl, convention team luncheon and Las Vegas show and then it’s game time. There shouldn’t be any surprises!
7. BYU will -once again- meet the same Las Vegas mayor show girls. They have a 5 year contract. Some guys will have three years worth of pictures with the same two show girls. Seriously, how often does that happen?
8. The awesome, themed rooms at the Planet Hollywood Hotel. Last year my wife and I had a giant Catwomen poster over our bath tub. Next door the Hutchinson’s had Woopie Goldberg’s cast enshrined in a case next to their bed. Ah…the Hollywood experience.
9. You can always hit up the outlet mall just off the strip to find your lady friend a discounted Christmas gift. You know she’s not the one, so why pay full price?
10. BYU gets another shot to rub a Pac-10 loss in Lee Corso’s and Kirk Herbiestreet’s face. That alone is worth the treacherous drive through the snow and the price of admission to the game.
Things that might not be the best the fourth time around:
1. After a few time to Vegas the tables start to look very alluring. Keeping your distance from the tables wasn’t hard the first and second year. Last year you barley made it out alive without putting it all on red. This year, you could get a little antsy around the dice and I’m sure someone gained a little confidence in their 21 abilities after watching the movie about the MIT guys. Hit me!
2. The Vegas Bowl committee has had enough, so they went ahead and booked the Golden Nugget for next year. (Just in case BYU come back for the fifth year. Is there such a thing as a 5 year reunion?)
3. With the current economic slump Las Vegas officials were hoping for a drunken, gambling Yewte crowd. Instead, 4 hotels filed chapter 7 bankruptcy minutes after Hall throw the interception to Paul Kruger.
4. Will the crowd rush the field after a win over Arizona? I’m just saying…last year the crowd rush was nice. This year it could get awkward when 6 fans bust through security and hoist Harvey on their shoulders only to drop him after a short jaunt to midfield.
5. What’s Bronco Mendenhall going to say at the Freemont St. pep rally? I am predicting a very short, very repetitive speech. “Stoops, have you lost a few pounds? I bet it feels good to still have a job. Oh yeah, thanks Pioneer, your great…strike up the band, hit it.”
6. Let’s hope that the ESPN zone center has some new video game.
7. This will be the first year that the Pac-10 team is actually excited and fortunate to be going to a bowl game. Let’s just hope Stoops can keep his guys out of the strip clubs.
8. Because BYU has had firesides at almost every stake center in Las Vegas Bronco decides to take his fireside to the street and institutes the inaugural street contacting night before the game. The Janimal has a ferocious street approach and Dallas shows some great footwork, which he perfected on the streets of Frankfurt, Germany.
9. Instead of staying in a hotel this year you decied your going to invest in some real estate down in Las Vegas, maybe a time share with a few friends. (when these thoughts start running through your head, it’s time to pack it up and head to a different venue.)
10. Honestly how many time can you walk the strip!

Great, funny write up. Here are a couple more to add:
Plus side:
11. Maybe this year you’ll take the opportunity to visit Hoover Dam.
Negative side:
11. You decide to finally look at those cards the guys on the street are flipping. Oops!
Good News for the BYU at the ESPN Zone.
1. They there will be a 2on2 contest and the hoops so they’ll be first in line.
2. They know that although that horse racing game looks fun, it is REALLY tiring (Let’s wear out those Cats)
3. Sure you’re a tough guy if you make it past a couple fighter in the virtual boxing ring, but you can’t lift your arms the next day.
I wonder what TKM is going to say this year outside New York New York…”Coach Bronco, it’s great to have your team here again, as Mountain West Conference, Cham…er…representatives for the 4th straight year. Kind of seems like our time here has come full circle.”
In all honesty these could go on forever!
Maybe in a decade the Las Vegas Bowl will actually be a big bowl game. Then we can look up at the four banners in a row on the west side of LES and smile knowing that we made that bowl game what it is. Kinda like what we do with the dozen or so Holiday Bowl banners from the 80s and early 90s.
I love the street contacting one. Classic
Question for Quinn and the other players: since 2003 a few BYU fans (Garn, FuriousMonkey, etc.) have become pretty good at putting highlight videos together of the games. Were these ever popular with the team, or did you have enough of the real thing?
NO way man, I loved the highlight videos they put together. We watched those ALL the time!
I’m excited about hearing David Hassellhoff’s national anthem. I consider a bowl game a reward for the players and I hope they have a great time. They’ve worked hard all year and they’ve provided another exceptional season with many entertaining games.
It’s going to be a barnburner, I can’t wait.
Quinn,
This was very creative and entertaining. Thanks for the laughs !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will be going to the game,it is my first bowl game so I am excited to be there.
I am so glad there are no Ute jerks on this page. Keep them out.
quinn – you might want to revise that #1…it is snowing in vegas with the prediction of quit a few inches of accumulation over night!!! yikes!
it looks like there definitely won’t be as much turnout for the Vegas Bowl this year with people driving down there. It actually makes me more tempted to make the trop seeing how cheap tickets AND gas are to go.
Come on, Quinn – why would we ever bet it all on RED?
Actually, I leave in Henderson (not too far from the stadium) and had about ten inches of snow in my backyard last night. It’s all melting now, LESS (LaVell Edwards Stadium South) sure looked like LES last night.
I’ve lived in Vegas and I like it. Maybe that’s because I never gambled, so I never lost. But the whole bowl picture is sad, like back to what the Holiday Bowl was in the early 80s. The stadium is junk, most of the parking is on dirt, the concessions overwhelmed other than the VIP suites (we scrounged a couple of tickets for that last year) and the streets in and out remind me of driving in the Middle East.
On the other hand, this could be The Place. If Las Vegas wanted a real Bowl Game, it could have one. Few cities can throw a party like Vegas. So, if the planes ever fly again and the tourists ever return, the Clark County Commission could (”could”) make up their minds to do it right. And doing it right in Las Vegas could be like nothing else.
Imagine a stadium built by Steve Wynn (granted, parking would cost $60) or a show that rivaled anything under the lights of Las Vegas Blvd.
To get really anal, Utah operates on a budget of about $11B to serve the states population of about 2.5M people. Clark County has a population of 1.8M people. Gaming revenue alone (the County’s share of gambling winnings) are almost $11B per year.
My point is, this is a place that could build an amazing stadium that could be more than a home field for UNLV. Under normal economic circumstances, Nevada prints money like toilet paper.
With a sponsor like Pioneer, this could be a kick butt bowl game. Unfortunately, it isn’t. But we can dream. It’s just too bad Las Vegas isn’t dreaming along with us.
