BYU=Good+prepared but certainly not athletic…

15 September 2008 Quinn Gooch 11 Comments

I have received a few emails about an article that Dick Harmon posted about a personal trainer that is trying to discredit BYU players.  I have read the article a few times and my heart is beating like crazy.  I am furious that this guy thinks that BYU players can’t, and I quote,”…from an athletic standpoint can’t sniff UCLA’s player’s jocks.”  This guy must not have been in the stands on Saturday.  I’ll have my thoughts down for all to read tomorrow, I just hope I can keep from cursing.

Have I mentioned that I hate the Pac-10? (See the post below)

The text is somewhat of a dialogue. You’ll have to read all of stoptothink’s responses.  The guy needs some smelling salt.

    Can we have a link? At least tell us if it’s from a UCLA or a BYU trainer. Thanks in advance. John

    Nevermind, I got off my lazy butt and found it on Harmon’s Blog. It’s a trainer that works in Utah County and not for one of these respective schools.

    Great Blog, BTW (yours).

    I would like to know the name of the trainer that said that. He’s a complete idiot!

    I’d be very interested to see if you can figure out who the trainer is. He’s in Provo and works with BYU players on the side because, as he says, “they’re strength and conditioning program is an absolute joke.” Scandal brewing?

    What the CRAP??!! I just went over to that site and read this guy’s drivel. First they need to find this guy, if he exists, and tell him to take a hike.

    I pose this question: Do we want better football players on this team, or better athletes? Seems like better athletes (and I dispute his claim that BYU’s players are inferior athletes) don’t always translate into better football players.

    I see that BYU gets recruits that want to become winners and champions. I believe Bronco recruits young men with talent AND heart. A lot of big programs recruit the hyped (and over-hyped) athletes who see $ signs and NFL careers. I don’t think that translates all the time into better football players. But what do I know….

    If by better athletes, he is referring to speed, then yes, BYU does not have a lot of speed. There is much more to athleticism than speed. I believe what BYU lacks in speed compared to, say, the SEC, they make up for in strength, stamina, and smarts. In other words, speed ain’t everything.

    This guy is full of shi! and he knows it. If this is true then I am sure it will get back to the players and they should be able to handle the situation in the proper manner. This guy can’t possibly be this stupid. Lets see how many extra trainers do the players have that supposable went to UCLA. Im sure if this is true it shouldn’t take more than a minute of thought for them to know who he is. Then this former walk on should get his arse walked on by the inferior coug players he just trash talked. STUPID….. yup hes from UCLA!

    Good job by the BYU Fan calling him out. He was a complete and total idiot.

    It’s just that dude’s way of getting attention. Being the only person in all of sports commentating that has something negative to say will get publicity.

    * BYU generally receives lower-rated recruiting classes than UCLA: TRUE. (UCLA ‘07: 36, BYU ‘07: 42). (Stats from scout.com)

    * UCLA generally receives more 5-star & 4-star athletes: TRUE. (UCLA ‘07: 1 5*, 6 4*; BYU: 0 5*, 4 4*).

    * Recruiting services frequently make mistakes when judging talent: TRUE.

    Interestingly, the gap here is not as great as the poster makes it seem. One of his claims is that BYU has few players offered by UCLA in specific & Pac-10 in general. In truth, a large number of BYU players had UCLA or Pac-10 offers.

    In short, the guy is so full of crap I can smell him through the internet.

    Amazing! Every post-game show I have heard during the past two years has included comments about the physical play of BYU. Somebody needs to tell me how, win or lose, a bunch of weenies and weaklings manage to beat up on the big, strong guys every week. Maybe it’s the pickle juice.
