As Jonny Linehan’s last-second drop goal sailed through the posts to give BYU a thrilling 27-24 win over rugby powerhouse Cal in the Varsity Cup national championship game on Saturday, what the 4000-plus fans at South Field witnessed was the dawning of a new era in collegiate rugby.

BYU and Cal Clash for Rugby National Title

Defending national champion BYU seeks its second-consecutive national club rugby championship when the Cougars host arch-nemesis Cal in the inaugural Varsity Cup National Collegiate Rugby Championship on Saturday afternoon.
The clash of national rugby powerhouses marks the seventh time in the last eight years that the two teams have met for the title, and will be the Cougars’ eighth straight championship game appearance.
BYU defeated Arkansas State 49-42 last year to claim the 2012 crown.

BYU Takes Aim at National Title

BYU Rugby plays perhaps its biggest game in program history this Saturday.
The Cougars (15-0) face the 25-time national champion Cal Bears (26-0) in the first ever College Premier Division rugby national championship game at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. MT.
The College Premier Division is newly created this year and consists of the upper-echelon of college programs in the nation.

No. 1 BYU Rugby Steamrolling Opponents

BYU Rugby (4-0, 8-0) is currently ranked No.1 in the country and is a solid favorite to once again advance to the national finals.
This season’s championship game will take place in Sandy, Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 21st.
The Cougars won a national championship in 2009, defeating perennial rugby powerhouse Cal.
