Would BYU be Left Out in a New Division 4?

By Louis E. Deaux
With all of the talk of the potential creation of a new, so-called “Division 4″ of college athletics, could BYU find itself left out in the cold?
The short answer is: No!
An in-depth look at the present direction, history and especially the landmark NCAA vs. Board of Regents of Oklahoma decision by the Supreme Court in 1983 reveals why BYU would be in with the other big boys and why Cougar fans should stop worrying so much about the possibility of the creation of a new division.
There may …

BYU’s Future in a Playoff World

Major college football is about to institute something that fans across the country have been begging for for years.
For the first time in the 137-year history of the sport, a true, undisputed national champion will be determined on the field of play beginning with the 2014 season.
The power players formerly known as the BCS are expected to roll out a four-team playoff later this month. Chief among the loose ends to tie up is just how the four teams that will vie for a national title will be selected.
Will it …

Will BYU be Invited to the Party?

We are currently in the middle of a historic change in the world of college athletics. By the time we reach the start of the 2012 season this September we are likely to witness major changes to the college football postseason, with a playoff in place by 2014 to determine a national champion.
We may also begin seeing the events that could lead to the demise of two former BCS conferences in the Big East and the ACC.
BYU fans and boosters are wondering when the sands stop shifting and all the …

A&M Could Throw a Wrench into BYU’s Plans

Texas A&M University has taken a major step towards departing the Big XII Conference.
On Thursday, Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin sent a letter to Big XII commissioner Dan Beebe notifying the conference that the school is looking at its conference affiliation options, and asking for clarification on the process of exiting the league.
It has been speculated over the past few weeks that the Aggies are committed to becoming a member of the Southeastern Conference.
If the move materializes, as many strongly believe it will, the Big XII will be reduced …

Could BYU Find Itself in the Big XII in 2012?

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe says that he hasn’t been contacted by the Big XII.
That could change in the very near future.
If reports are accurate, Texas A&M could be leaving the Big XII in favor of the Southeastern Conference.
Such a move would leave the Big XII with just nine schools, and it could trigger the dawn of a super-conference arms race.
That said, SEC officials emerged from a special meeting on Sunday without inviting the Aggies and officially stating that the conference is currently comfortable with its 12-school membership.
Those close to …

Expect BYU to Stay the Course

Talk of Texas A&M and Oklahoma potentially jumping to the SEC has stirred a lot of talk over the past few days about how such a move could affect BYU.
The Cougars became a football independent on July 1 and moved most of their other athletic programs into the West Coast Conference.
So what would happen if a spot or two opened up in the Big 12 and BYU received an invitation to become a member?
That’s a question that is hard to answer and one that has many variables to factor in. …

WCC, Here Come the Cougars

All good things must come to and end.
After a dozen years of dominating the Mountain West Conference, the BYU Cougars embark on a new and bold future in just a matter of hours.
When the clock strikes midnight tonight, the majority of BYU’s athletic programs will officially move to the West Coast Conference as part of the University’s mission to control its own television rights and migrate it’s football program to independence.
BYU’s addition to the WCC immediately lift’s the conference’s profile and raises the level of competition.

TCU’s Move May Kill Off the WAC

TCU moving to the Big East in 2012 is bad news for the Mountain West Conference, but it could be even worse news for the Western Athletic Conference.
With the loss of the Horned Frogs, the MWC has essentially been reduced to the MAC plus Boise State.
It’s also the final nail in the coffin of the league’s hopes of becoming an automatic qualifying conference for the BCS.
Even with Nevada and Fresno State coming from the WAC in 2012, the conference is now light years from ever being considered for inclusion.
A much …

Introducing the Deseret Book Bowl

While BYU waits to see where it will officially go bowling this year (sounds like the New Mexico Bowl or Armed Forces Bowl are the two most likely destinations), what does the bowl future hold for an independent BYU?
It would seem logical that BYU could forge a relationship with one of the existing bowls. After all, each of the current independents have their own bowl tie-ins.
Navy to the Poinsettia Bowl, Army to the Military Bowl and Notre Dame to both the Champs Sports and Sun Bowls (assuming the Irish don’t …

MWC Schools May Need BYU in 2011

It would interesting to be a fly on the wall in the office of BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe this week.
With the announcement that Fresno State and Nevada will remain in the WAC until the 2012 season, Mountain West schools are now scrambling to to fill a void in their schedules for 2011.
With just eight schools, every football program in the MWC will now play just seven conference games next year.  That means each school has at least one game it must fill in order to get to …
