Can Taysom Hill Take the Next Step?

OK, let’s just speak the truth here.
BYU quarterback Taysom Hill was just plain bad during last Friday night’s open scrimmage at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Officially, he completed 9 of his 18 pass attempts for 89 yards, while throwing one touchdown and an interception. But those numbers don’t really tell the story of just how anemic the offense was when the junior was under center.
The first team unit struggled mightily to execute in the passing game and failed to consistently sustain drives.
Sound familiar?
At times Hill looked like he was trying to place …

Preseason Preview: BYU vs. UCF

BYU is scheduled to travel to Orlando, Fla on Oct. 9 to face the UCF Knights in an intriguing inter-sectional match up.
This is a return game for the Cougars, who defeated UCF 24-17 in Provo during the 2011 season.
Cody Hoffman’s 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown helped to offset the fact that the Knights outgained BYU by 139 yards that night.
This season’s contest will take place on a Thursday night, meaning the Cougars will have to travel across the country on a short week.
UCF goes into the 2014 campaign with …

Latest BYU Roster Reveals Gains and Loses

BYU has recently updated its football roster, and it’s always interesting to see what players have done during the offseason in regards to developing themselves physically.
For example, star quarterback Taysom Hill is now listed at 6-2, 232. That’s up 11 pounds from his listed weight of 221 as a freshman and four pounds from his playing weight last year.
Despite the added weight, Hill hasn’t seemed to lose any of his speed from last year when he was making a comeback from knee surgery and wearing a brace. His combination of …

Jonny Harline: Execution Trumps Desire

For any former athlete, the task of critiquing their old team is a tough one.
Go too soft on them and you’re a homer with no credibility, be a little harsh and you run the risk of suddenly not feeling so welcome around your old stomping grounds.
Especially when a team is struggling, it can seem like a no win situation. So for my selfish sake and many other reasons I hope BYU does especially well this year!
With that in mind I’ve agreed to share some of my thoughts with readers of …

BYU Preparing to Unleash Its Twin Towers

Opposing defensive secondaries may find themselves with an unenviable task this fall when they face the BYU offense.
With the ongoing emergence of wide receiver Nick Kurtz (6-6, 205 Jr.), the JUCO transfer has found himself playing opposite veteran Mitch Mathews (6-6, 215 Jr.) with a great deal of regularity over the first few practices of fall camp.
During Wednesday’s 11-on-11 portion of practice, BYU’s twin towers both ran with the first team offense, split out on opposite sides of the field, with UTEP transfer Jordan Leslie (6-3, 210 Sr.) often playing …

BYU Finding Answers to Key Questions

If the first couple of days of BYU fall football practice are any indication, the Cougars appear to be significantly ahead of schedule in answering some key questions for the 2014 season.
Bronco Mendenhall’s squad kicked off camp hoping to see the offense make major strides in the passing game, find replacements for three starting linebackers, including superstar Kyle Van Noy, and find an answer at place kicker.
The head coach and his staff have to feel pretty good about where their team stands as they move into the first full week …

Key BYU RMs to Watch in Fall Camp

BYU will welcome an army of return missionaries to the football program when the Cougars open fall camp on Friday.
During media day last month, head coach Bronco Mendenhall said that 18 players would join the program for the 2014 season.
Last week, it was reported that Corbin Kaufusi (6-9, 260 Fr.), the younger brother of Bronson, will not play football this year, but will walk on to the basketball team instead.
It appears that Kaufusi’s spot on the roster will be filled by Utah transfer Harvey Langi (6-2, 210 Fr.), who returned …

Preseason Preview: BYU vs. Utah State

BYU should be well rested when it faces in-state rival Utah State on a Friday night in week six of the 2014 college football season.
The Cougar have a bye week leading up to the game, while Utah State will be operating on a short week following a road contest at Arkansas State.
BYU has won 13 of the last 14 games in this long-time series, including last season’s 31-14 victory in Logan. Since 1975, the Cougars have dominated the rivalry, going 29-4 against the Aggies.
Last season’s game was highlighted by Kyle …

Preseason Preview: BYU vs. Virginia

BYU’s home game against Virgina in week four of the 2014 season is an opportunity for the Cougars to redeem themselves following last season’s disappointing loss to the Cavaliers.
Despite outgaining UVA by 140 yards, the Cougars left a rain-soaked Scott Stadium on the wrong end of a 19-16 decisions.
The Cavaliers would not win another game against an FBS Division-1 opponent the rest of the season, finishing with a 2-10 record.
The Cougars stumbled out of the gate in their first game implementing Robert Anae’s new fast-tempo, read-option offense.
A deluge of rain, …

Preseason Preview: BYU vs. Houston

BYU and Houston put on a show at Reliant Stadium in this game last season, rolling up a combined 1,164 yards of total offense.
In the end, the Cougars in blue prevailed 47-46 in one of the more entertaining games of the 2013 season when Taysom Hill found Skyler Ridley in the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown strike with 1:08 remaining.
BYU linebacker Alani Fua then sealed the deal by picking off Houston quarterback John O’Korn with 42 second to go.
Hill had his best passing day of the year, throwing for 417 …
