Ziggy’s Talents Will Fit in Well in Motor City

The truth be told, the Detroit Lions may have passed on former BYU defensive end Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah with their No. 5 pick in Thursday’s first round of the NFL draft if one of the top three offensive tackles would have been available.
The Lions entered draft weekend with three primary needs–offensive tackle, defensive secondary and defensive end. Either Eric Fisher of Central Michigan, Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M or Lane Johnson from Oklahoma could have provided Detroit’s franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford with much needed security on his blind side.
With those …

BYU Pro Day Analysis

The BYU football program hasn’t produced an NFL draft pick in three years.
That is virtually guaranteed to change in four weeks when the NFL Draft kicks off at Radio City Music Hall in New York. In fact, it’s entirely possible that one Cougar could hear his name called fairly early on day one of the draft.
Of course, just about every college and pro football fan has now heard of Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah and his rise from an unkown, inexperienced player from Ghana to the bright lights of fame and fortune …

Brandon Ogletree Sets His Sights on the NFL

Former BYU buck linebacker Brandon Ogletree is looking to buck the odds and make a living by playing in the National Football League.
He’s currently preparing for BYU’s Pro Day in March, the final opportunity he may have to leave an impression before the draft.
Ogletree has led Bronco Mendenhall’s defense in tackles in each of the last two seasons. In 2012, he recorded 102 tackles playing in the center of the nation’s No. 3 defense.
Playing alongside defensive stars like Kyle Van Noy and Ziggy Ansah, Brandon was sometimes overshadowed; but draft …

Andrew Rich Gets His Shot at the NFL

As a football fan, if you can’t root for a player like former BYU strong safety Andrew Rich, you can’t root for anyone.
The two-time All-Mountain West Conference performer, and the heart and soul of Bronco Mendenhall’s defense the past two seasons, was disappointed this past February when he was not invited to the NFL combine.
Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals officially announced that they have signed Rich and former BYU offensive lineman Jason Speredon to free agent contracts.
The two new Cardinals join defensive end Vic So’oto, who signed with the Green Bay …

Is John Beck About to Get His Shot?

Could this be the season that former BYU quarterback John Beck finally gets his chance to show what he can do as an NFL quarterback?
The Washington Redskins and head coach Mike Shanahan appear to be willing to give the former Cougar his first legitimate opportunity to lead a team — if of course we have a season this year.
The Redskins are sure to cut loose veteran Donovan McNabb as soon as teams are allowed to make roster moves.
Meanwhile, Rex Grossman, who the Redskins acquired last season along with McNabb,  is …

All Hail, Maximus!

Former BYU quarterback Max Hall is turning into one of the feel good stories in the NFL.
Even the most ardent Hall fans didn’t seen this coming.
Yesterday he led the Arizona Cardinals to a 30-20 win over the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
Hall was supposed to be too small, too slow and have too weak of an arm to play in the NFL. In training camp this summer, Hall looked like a smurf next the the other quarterbacks in camp.
Yet, there he was on Sunday, an undrafted free agent …

I got a text from Quinn asking me if I would write a little bit about 2006’s final drive. Detailing my thougts and feelings on the final drive. I think for the rest of my life whenever it is the BYU vs Utah week I will always be reminded of that game in 2006. Even as I sit here typing, I have above me on a shelf the ball I took the final knee with. I wanted the ball that Johnny caught, but I don’t know if anybody knows where …

“I was up late last night – didn’t’ leave Applebee’s until about 11:30.  Thanks to their Direct TV sports package, that has become my hotspot every week for the last few months.  Drum roll please….they actually have the Mtn. network!!!! I know, it takes a second to sink in.  So anyway, every Saturday afternoon of the college football season has found me at Applebee’s cheering loudly for my Cougs.  In fact, when the poor Huskies had their PAT blocked, preserving a Y victory – I was yelling so loud everyone …

It was good to see so many CSU and BYU alumni on the sideline and I was waiting for Beck or Denney to join in on the celebration. Personally I like to see that kind of excitement. I understand that it’s a penalty, but for that CSU team just think how much emotion that gave them.

This has been a rather crazy week!!  I tore some ligaments in my foot in last week’s game against the Steelers and so I haven’t had a ton of time for my weekly entry. The last couple days have been complete with X-Rays, MRIs, Doctor visits and much treatment in the team training room.  I included a picture of the play I was hurt on and as you can see I’m very fortunate and VERY grateful I wasn’t injured worse.  I should add – it is making great progress, and …
