Cougars Crush Utes
BYU rolled Tuesday night in the first athletic contest between the Cougars and Utes since the two schools departed the Mountain West Conference.
The No. 24 womens’s soccer team, a new member of the West Coast Conference, crushed their PAC-12 rivals 4-0 in front of a standing room only crowd of 4,437 at BYU’s South Field.
Following a scoreless first half, the Cougars caught fire, scoring four goals in the second half at the 57th, 64th, 77th and 82nd minute marks.
Four different Cougars got into the scoring column with junior star Jessica Ringwood, steady senior Auna Doria, freshman Jaiden Thornock from Bonneville High and San Diego State transfer Niki Fernandes finding the back of the Utah goal.
“We just wanted to come out in the second half with more heart and passion,” said Ringwood, who got the Cougars on the board on a free kick. “We knew this game was going to be a battle the whole way through and we know this game is as important as any conference game.”
Head coach Jennifer Rockwood settled down her team at the half and her players certainly seemed to respond.
“I just told the girls we needed more emotion and a little more passion,” said Rockwood. “I think they were a little nervous for their first game with lots of fans, but they came out in the second half nice and strong. Auna did such a good job for us up top. She always provides that spark we need. And when Jess put away that free kick, it really opened the door for us and we turned it on from there.”
The Cougars won their fifth straight over Utah and their dominance in the game was reflected in the fact that they finished the night with an 18-3 shot-on-goal advantage on their opponents from up north. The win pushes BYU to 1-0-1 so far on the young 2011 season, after the Cougars played 24th-ranked Washington to a 2-2 tie on the Huskies home field on Saturday.
Next up for the Cougars is a match-up with Miami of the ACC on Friday night at South Field. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 8 pm and will be broadcast live on BYUtv.
