Could you imagine this in all blue…
This video is of Penn State’s stadium when they do a white-out. Each fan wears white and they also have a white towel that they wave during the introduction and game. It looks amazing and shows the fans loyalty and dedication to supporting the team. It would be hard to pull off, but could we?
We would need to first organize 64,000 small blue towels, and then we would have to hand them out somewhere outside of the stadium. BYU doesn’t allow anyone to interfere with people getting to the game and they also have a contract with ISP which makes accomplishing this task difficult. Anyone have some suggestions, how great would it be to see such a spectacle during this season. I think once everyone sees the stadium waving a terrible blue towel there wouldn’t be a game without one. Sound off in the comments and let’s see if we can come up with a good solution.

This is harder to pull off with the Navy Blue that we have now than it was would have been with the old royal blue. The brighter the color the easier it is for it to stand out.
Would it be possible to work with the cheerleaders and dance teams to disperse the towels to the crowd when they are in their seats before the game starts? The other option would be to try and partner with the ticket office to distribute the towells with the tickets.
When Lavell had his last stand on that frigid day years ago they handed out white growl towels. They weren’t yet on board with the “blue out”. I don’t know what ISP is or what obstacles would stand in the way, but that is one time they got it done. Probably a little late for this, but a blue Quest for Perfection growl towel handed out at Homecoming (whenever that is) would be a great time to release the beast that is blue at LES for the rest of the season.
Would it be possible to place the towels on the seats before anyone arrives?
cougarboard.com was able to hand out a bunch of dark blue t-shirts a couple weeks ago with little to no problem.
If we could get someone to create/donate the towels, I’d bet that cougarboard/cougarguard wouldn’t have a hard time organizing something to get them all handed out. The manpower to deliver them wouldnt’ be too hard, its getting them that would be hard. Just position people on the street near the entrances. Far enough away that they don’t hamper anyone getting in, but close enough that anyone coming in sees them.
I know last season they had blue towels on a lot of the seats in the Marriott Center for a men’s b-ball game. It was probably about 1/6 as many was would be needed to fill LES, but it would be a start. That may have been the ‘Deseret First Duel’ game against Utah.
Could we get Bronco to go on the news requesting the fans do such a thing? He’s had success with the T-shirts each season. Maybe it’s too far into the season, may take a few seasons to get a tradition like this going. We’re already doing so much better with t-shirts though.
I agree that Navy Blue just doesn’t stick out as much.
Other ideas: We just start requesting on all forum boards, to all friends/family/everywhere we go.
I would go for white towels instead of blue, personally.
The white growl towels were great back in the 80s….
As long as we’ve got those pink-polo-with-the-collar-down-over-white-polo-with-the-collar-pulled-up-over-green-tee-wearing fools attending the games, you really think we’re going to be able to get even close to 95% of the fans even wearing blue?
I typically draw more than a few dirty looks from my comments towards the fools wearing red to the games. I can understand people wearing other colors (mostly womenfolk, of which I consider the polo wearers to be a part of), and even those wearing Ute gear (though I will NEVER understand the desire to go to a rival’s game when your own team is playing at the same time). But if you’re looking through your closet to pick the shirt you want to wear to the game, and you come across that red (or anything in the red family) shirt, what the HELL are you thinking when you decide that’s the one you want to wear?
First you would have to make sure that all the old fogies on the west side of the stadium show up on time.
Agreed. The students will do whatever. But all the uh…veteran fans seem to be less enthusiastic for this kind of thing.
Our problem is our blue is very soft, it doesn’t show up well. We need a brighter blue, or do again as we did in the past, everybody wear white! After all, white is also our “color.”
REAL COUGARS WEAR WHITE!!!!!
Ever wonder why Penn State doesn’t try a “blue out?” Yes. That’s right. It doesn’t work. Never will. As BYU fans, we really need to realize this and quit wasting our energy to try and make a “blue out” work.
I wear whatever colors I want to the game. It really doesn’t make me less of a fan. I’m probably the biggest BYU fan ever. I have not missed a home game (and have gone to at least three away games) every year since 2001.
That being said, I don’t get excited for a blue-out because I’ve seen it fail over and over. I wear blue… at times. But why try to get the entire fan base to engage in an effort that always fails and doesn’t look impressive? Let’s wear white, just like Penn State and forget dreaming about a blue-out. Bring back the white growl towels from the 80’s and I’ll freaking wear my old baptismal clothes to the game. White-outs work. Blue-outs don’t work and never will.
White sticks out a lot better than navy blue unfortunately. In fact, ANYTHING sticks out better than Navy blue.
Plus you’d have to find someone to buy all those shirts and towels. The white-out you see is the result of some corporation handing out thousands upon thousands of free white shirts for advertising.
Regardless, I’ve given up on the Blue-out idea because the eye doesn’t catch blue well. White-outs work a lot better, even if not everyone is wearing white.
Quinn-not sure where the $ would come from but I work at Uinta Golf and am positive with that many towels would be able to swing an awesome deal. Email me and I’ll give you the name of our buyer, cell # etc if you’d like to ringlead something.

ISP is the sports marketing company that controls all of the marketing around BYU athletics except KSL radio. It’s a common arrangement across the NCAA and has been beneficial to BYU. University of Utah uses CBS Sports Marketing, a division of CBS Broadcasting.
Growl Towels have been handed out at other games, including the LV Bowl. I think we have a few left over.
A likely scenario would be that a sponsor would come forward to provide the towels with a Y on one side and a sponsor logo somewhere else. Some money would flow to BYU Athletics with a percentage to ISP for their cut.
I don’t know if ISP still gets a fee if the BYU Bookstore sponsors the promotion.
As for BYU fans wearing plaid, red, brown coveralls, pink and green, I could not agree more with Brandon, though I’ve never actually said anything to other fans. However, once clad in all blue, I did once have an adult, male, apparently local “BYU Fan,” attack me with, “Wearing enough blue?” as I walked up the bleachers. I wanted to deck him.
As a whole, BYU fans have a way to go. A small part of the problem is the University’s policy and lack of active support for tailgating. Some of it is due to the “Cougar Town,” activities and vendors who pay a royalty and the lack of an official tailgating lot. Nonetheless, it has never been encouraged as part of BYU sports culture out of fear that a visiting fan, or maybe even a Cougar fan, might drink beer before entering the stadium.
The bigger problem is the community itself, including some (but few) students. And, since I know I will draw some criticism for insulting the fan base, let me ask:
Have you ever been to a Texas A&M game?
Ever seen an all red Huskers traffic jam on a Saturday in Omaha?
Have you been to Norman? South Bend? Madison? Baton Rouge? Ann Arbor?
Have you ever been to Salt Lake City? On that one, I admit that in a normal year the Utes can’t even fill their 45,000 seats while BYU sells well over 50,000 season tickets. But Ute fans wear red. They tailgate. They are vile and obnoxious. But they are dedicated.
The BYU community model for a fan base should be Notre Dame. The fans are dedicated, but polite and hospitable to all comers. It’s a kind of quiet confidence and commitment that comes from decades of winning. Could Provo and Cougar fans become as dedicated to the same “Quest for Perfection,” as the team? Time will tell.
White out with blue towels would work well. Or, at the front gate give fans wearing blue a white towel, fans wearing white a blue towel, and fans wearing anything else a bus pass to go home and change.
“I gotta have more cow bell baby!”
Wearing white is lame. White is every team’s color…granted more so for Penn State than other schools.
It’s not about standing out, it’s about supporting the team w/ unity.
Wear Blue!

Listen to Lavell.
Are we 100% Blue yet? No, but at least the majority are wearing CougarBlue, and not the red, green, yellow, or plaid stuff before.
Also, if you want to see a Before/After shot from last season….go here….and look at the inlet in the bottom left hand corner…and compare that to the bigger photo…big difference.
I forgot the link…here it is.
