Ranking Poll -Who gets it done this week?

29 October 2008 Quinn Gooch 24 Comments

If you picked an upset leave a comment telling everyone why. My upset pick is Texas Tech over #1 Texas. It’s a bold prediction, but I think it will be Alabama and Penn State playing for the National Championship. (At least that’s this weeks pick. If Texas wins they go to the big dance and I’ll have to rethink my predictions.)

I think Utah’s ripe for the upset. They’re on the road at NM and they’re fat and happy after last week’s easy home win over CSU. They’re due for a choke; they do it every year.

I think we move up after an easier win than we had last week. If we can make big improvements in the next two then I like our chances against AF and the FrUtecakes.

If we win out and the FrUtecakes recover to beat TCU, we do still have an outside chance at the BCS. At the very least we set ourselves up nicely for next year.

I agree with RobbC that the Yewtes are due for a pirate shipwreck.

I don’t see Texas Tech outlasting Texas but that would be fun to watch.

If anything Florida pounds the Dawgs just like they did LSU and those stinking gators start crying about NC implications.

  • Chance said:

There is no way Utah loses this week. They maybe one of the most inconsistent teams I’ve seen in the past few seasons but this year look for real. They find a way to win even when Brian Johnson isn’t playing well. But I don’t know, maybe that Lobo 3-3-5 defense has something up there sleeves. I guess we’ll see… But I’d rather see us beat an undefeated Utah at the end of the season instead of a one loss Utah.
Also, I think we win, but no blowout, at CSU. Assuming our offense plays well again and our defense plays well enough to win. Go COUGS!!!

    UTAH v UNM:
I am right there with Chance. The Utes, although I hate to say it, won’t let this trip to UNM ruin their year.

    BYU v CSU:
We play CSU tough and win a close one, unless our D finds a way to play run defense this week.

    BYU v AFA:
AFA will not be a close game for us, unless AFA pulls out a bunch of Tulsa-type trick plays.

    TEXAS v TECH:
I like Texas Tech here. Unlike past years, they have a defense and both offenses are equal. This may be a shoot out, but I think Tech Takes it.

  • Markell Staffieri said:

Alright…who picked CSU? and Why? That is the question of the day.

I am genuinely interested in what you may see that we don’t.

  • Jeff D said:

You really have to ask why someone picked CSU. Have you watched BYU on the road this year? They have played 3 games on the road this year. The two they won were to teams with a combined record of 1-13. When they actually played a team that was good they got drilled. They follow that up with a close game at home to a 3-5 UNLV team that is 0-4 in conference. That is evidence enough for me to think that they could lose this game.

  • Quinn Gooch (author) said:

Jeff D bringing out the big guns with that perdiction. Honestly I can’t argue with your logic.

I just like picking BYU. It just feels right.

  • D-Wall said:

Cougs haven’t lost in Fort Collins since 2002 and that was to a ranked CSU team. We haven’t lost to CSU, home or away, since the 2003 blowout at LES. I think the Cougs will roll.

Interesting to note that CSU beat UNLV 41-28 in Fort Collins. CSU was actually behind 28-27 with nine seconds left in the game, but then CSU scored two touchdowns in the final nine seconds.

Even though we played UNLV similar to how CSU played the rebels, I think we match up better with the rams. Cougs roll.

  • D-Wall said:

By the way, I picked Arkansas in an upset over Tulsa. This is likely our last hope that Tulsa loses. I don’t know why, but can’t stand the Bronze Hurricanes. Cannot stand them. Hope they lose this weekend and every weekend after that.

  • Paul Davis said:

I like Texas Tech over Texas this week. Texas is coming off 3 consecutive huge wins at home/neutral sites. I expect that they won’t be able to maintain such a high level of play for a fourth consecutive week on the road; and the Red Raiders are very good.

I also like Georgia, Tulsa, Utah, and Minnesota in those games.

As for BYU, I expect a win here. They will give up some yards on defense, but I don’t thing CSU will be able to be as effective at finishing drives as UNLV was last week, and the offense will get it done on their side of the ball.

  • Witt said:

I have thought the Dogs were overrated all year long until they beat LSU in Tiger Stadium. Now, I think they may have the stuff to take it to Urban’s Gatorades between the hedges.

I wanted to pick Texas Tech, especially at home, but I think Colt McCoy is the real deal. And what a football name! If this guy makes it to the NFL (6′3″ 210) he will be going Wrangler Jeans commercials.

Picked the Utes, but I’ll be pulling for the Lobos as well as the Rebels. I think UNLV will give the Frogs a tougher game than BYU did. Actually, everybody is going to give TCU a tougher game this year than BYU.

  • Witt said:

BTW, I would LOVE to see TCU play Tulsa I’d have to pull for the Frogs in an 84 to 77 win over the Wind.

  • Trey said:

How can you not like Tulsa? Maybe it has something to do with beating us last year. ;-)

Don’t expect it to be that close in Fort Collins. CSU is another team in which Bronco has their number. Cougs roll on this one. Unfortunately, fans are going to overestimate this win and think that we are great again, not realizing how bad CSU is. They’re terrible. The only team worse than CSU in our conference is SDSU. AFA will be a better game, though we take them too.

There aren’t any real upsets this week, but I do have Minnesota over Northwestern. Not sure if that is an upset or not.

  • kiyoshige said:

No way Texas loses. That team is hotter than the branding iron on the TT dude ranch. I originally had BYU playing Alabama for the NC, but now I’m praying (can I do that?) for Texas – Alabama. Would ABSOLUTELY HATE for a Big 10 school to get into that game when clearly Big 12 and SEC are having outstanding years, but I think Gooch is right. Odds are those teams will beat each other up and it will be an undefeated Penn St who gets exposed by the Big 12 or SEC undefeated team. I just think Texas has an “easier” schedule than the SEC schools (neither are EASY).

My upset? How about Georgia Tech over Florida St (in true COUGAR BLUE fashion, I have to pick someone ahead of BYU to lose).

As for our Cougars – look for them to win this one in overtime, 42-38. Will be 35-35 and our defense will get shredded all game, but hold them to a field goal in overtime (this time Scott Johnson breaks up the pass on 3rd and goal from the 8). On our possession, we will make it inside the 10 on a few running and short pass plays. Then we will go Collie/Pitta to one side, Reed to the other and Unga as a single back. It will be playaction and we’ll find the hometown hero George all alone in the back of the end zone for the winning TD in first overtime. Just a prediction.

  • kiyoshige said:

Oops. 41-38. Sorry, my math is a little off.

  • Gunny said:

I feel BYU will do just fine with CSU. Something tells me they are improving all around. Bronco is a smart guy, he knows how to win!

Texas Tech will win this game at home. Thier QB is on fire and Texas will come into this game thinking they already have it in the bag. Besides that, I’m from Texas and use to support Tech long ago.

    Go Cougs!!!!

  • Staff said:

Why CSU will be a short nail biter…

BYU’s best rushing game of the year is always against CSU and their Tampa 2. Problem is CSU loves to run and they have Gartrel and Bell. We will not play the run well enough and both teams will run all night along with the clock.

Key to the game will be our D forcing 3rd and long where they can’t run.

  • Brandon said:

Sadly, there won’t be many upsets this week. At least few that will affect BYU. Georgia will lose to Florida. Texas @ Tech is going to be a pick’em, with Texas the likely winner. Losers of those games will not drop below BYU.

  • JaredC said:

I think the BYU/CSU game end up being a tight game

    24-21 BYU

I think CSU runs the ball up and down the field and doesn’t give BYU’s offense many chances to score. BYU kicks a field goal on the last drive of the game.

By the way, any idea who will have primary coverage of Kory Sperry? I think he is the wild card in this game. If CSU gets him the ball (which I don’t think they will) often, then it could be a long night for the Cougs.

  • JaredC said:

I also think since CSU’s quarterback is not a running quarterback Jorgenson has a break out night with a couple sacks.

  • Mars said:

Penn State will be in the national championship game.
    Alabama will not.

Boise State will play in their 2nd BCS bowl game.
    Utah will not.

South Florida, the only Big East team in the BCS Top 25, will lose at Cincinnati.
Georgia Tech will beat Florida State, the top ranked ACC team.
Northwestern will beat Minnesota, the only 1-loss team left in the Big Ten.
Texas will beat Texas Tech. Florida will beat Georgia. Oregon will beat Cal.

  • K Olsen said:

I think the yewts could be in for a trap game IF and only IF NM can find some offense. They have been horrible at best. The defense should give johnson fits. Heres to a break out game for the LOBOS!

  • SonOFpeRdiTioN said:

TT over TX in a shootout
GA over FL in a close, close game
Tulsa over Ark (unfortunately) pass happy Tulsa is going to pass all over them
BYU puts it away late against CSU by 14 in a hard fought game
Utah struggles against UNM, but wins
MInn beats NW, but so what.

    In the Coaches Poll
TT goes to #1, and Texas drops to #4
GA jumps to #6 and FL falls to #11
    Utah moves up to #8
Tulsa and BYU switch places at #17 & #18
