The Utes gimmicks work and they down the Frogs.

Man what happened to the TCU defense that last drive and what was with the Frogs offensive coordinator not giving the ball to Aaron Brown. I understand that Dalton has been playing well in the last few games, but Brown could of ran you all the way to the BCS.

Alas, I am still somewhat thankful that the team from the North won only because it keeps BYU’s chances alive.

But how about the black clad MUSS storming the field after the win? There are going to be some splitting headaches tomorrow as students stumble into their basket weaving classes.

I digress….I was impressed with the way Utah has handled the close games. The Utes have probably the best kicker in the country, and they also continue to score when they need to in order to win. It was crazy to watch a team that hadn’t come close to scoring a TD all night drive down the field with determination and swagger to punch in the go ahead score.

BYU fans we can deny it all we won’t, but we have to admit that the Northern red headed stepchild team isn’t bad. Over rated…possibly, cocky definitely…..ripe for a blue beat down….without question. Utah fans are screaming that it will never happen three times in a row. They are holding their breaths, grasping onto the idea that their team is destine for the BCS. There is only one problem…fourth quarter, under a minute is when BYU has been playing their best football. If your shaking your head is disbelief, that’s OK you only have two more weeks to wait.

If you are looking for some recent history on the subject try and get a hold of Johnny Harline. He’s in the back left corner of your end zone, you shouldn’t miss him, he’ll be holding the ball under a pile of white jerseys. Oh yeah, you could also try and catch Austin. He’ll be running down the sideline at LES with his hand up, waving to help you find him. Dang you missed him to, better luck this year.

Utah didn’t win that game, TCU lost it.

I woke up this morning singing this:

Bud Light Present, “Real Men of Genius”.

    (Real Men of Genius.)

Today we salute you, Mr. Texas Christian Offensive Coordinator.

    (Mr. Texas Christian Offensive Coordinator!!)

Down after down, drive after drive, you dial up the perfect plays–to not put points on the board.

    (That’s execution)

When you get the chance to step on the opponent’s throat and go up 17-6, your wide-open receiver finally catches the ball … just out of bounds.

(That line is so hard to see!)

While conventional wisdom says moving forward on third down is important you have vision to say ‘au contraire.’

(What’s French for ‘out of field goal range’?)

And when the chips are down and all you need is a pair of 30-yard field goals to put the game away …

    (oh, we’re so close!)

You get to show everyone why that fan kicking contest you heard about was such a bad idea.

(Why can’t Texans make a field goal?)

So keep directing those might Horned Frogs, oh titan of the frozen tundra, because you have to know when Gary Patterson moves on for that big BCS contract there’s no way he’s talking you with him.

    (Mr. Texas Christian Offensive Coordinator!!)

I completely agree! I’m sick and tired of hearing some BYU fans completely writing the Cougars off come November 22. If that game is close, which it will be, I’ve got my money on the boys of BYU. We’ve shown that we play our best in the clutch and it’s like you said, we make enough plays to win. And what the heck is up with Utah fans storming the field twice?! Especially against OSU! It’s like they’ve already won the MWC Championship or something, it is still definitely not over. GO COUGS!!!

  • Parker said:

Also, Utah has shown the last couple games that they are very vulnerable and have some weaknesses. They are definetily beatable.

    Quinn,
It seems like the Utah offense finally found success moving the ball by going no huddle. How hard is it on a defense when the opponent goes no huddle? It seems that BYU’s offense could use this earlier in the game (like I believe they have done a few times this year, but very rarely) to not only keep the defense off and wear down the defense. Why does BYU’s offense wait to snap the ball until the defense is set up?

  • Quinn Gooch (author) said:

I know that tempo is very important to Coach Anae. It makes it hard on a defense because everything speeds up..the call needs to come into the defense faster which puts more pressure on the coaches. It adds to the stress of making a defensive call. Also the players on the field have to think quicker, which sometimes can be a problem.

The offense usually waits till the defense gets set to see what they might be doing. It plays to the whole pre-snap reads principle.

    Quinn,

Assuming we get past Air Force, which isn’t a given considering how the season has gone, I have two questions for you regarding the Utah game:

    1. Does the Defense have the balls to do what it takes and step up against the Utes? We won’t win that game if the defense doesn’t make some big plays.

    2. Are Bronco and Anae going to treat this like “any other game,” or is Anae going to drop some of the stubborness and adjust to crazy pressure defense we know the Utes will bring?

  • art director said:

    Jeff,

I’ve heard Bronco get asked this question.

There is a chance that offense catches the D off-guard by snapping early, but by taking less time to be sure all the linemen are on the same page, there’s an equal risk that someone would not get their assignment right.

Now there have been a few times that BYU has done a quick snap (like vs UCLA), but the coaches feel the risk is big enough to not use it very much.

  • Cnation said:

    Quinn,

Why don’t more teams call timeouts when the other team is moving the ball quickly down the field in a no huddle offense. You would think that calling a timeout would help the D regroup. Any insight?

  • aemadrid said:

@art director – you cracked me up. That comment deserves a post by itself!

  • Brandon said:

I would like nothing better than to be the team to keep Utah out of the BCS.

Still, given the D’s inability to actually stop an O, and their tendency to give up big plays on Gimmick plays, you can be sure Utah will run a dozen or so of those gimmicks on the 22nd. BYU’s D will have to be prepared & will have to play well.

BYU’s O should score some points on Utah. If they play well, I don’t see Utah holding BYU under 24 points.

I love Ludwig. They average 6 yards per play running short routes, running up the gut, so what does he call? Fumble-freakin-ruski! Awesome. Or some sweep double reverse that loses 15 yards. How the Ute fans haven’t run him out of town is beyond me. I’ll take Anae’s vanilla consistency any day.

    Art,
Were you looking at my take on TC?

    Remember,
We can not only keep Utah out of the BCS, we just may find ourselves catapulting past Boise St and back into the BCS bowl picture.

We have to take care of business against SDSU and then our line and backers have to stop that AF rushing attack.

Then, no way do we prepare for Utah like it’s “any other game.” The juggernaut of ESPN/ABC will be kicking itself that they can’t do GameDay at Rice Eccles (there are a few other big games that weekend). The difference between this year’s team and Beck/Harline is just senior leadership, especially on the defensive side. You never know whether the Holy War is going to be a shootout or a defensive grind, but this year my guess is a lot of points. Hopefully we’ll just put up 45 in the first half and half of the stadium will leave at halftime!

The reasons why I (and other BYU faithful) fear the Utes are the matchups that Godfrey, Casteel and Brown present. Those receivers against our secondary spells trouble. The one thing we have is our defense faces Collie, Pitta, George, Reed & Co in practice. The Utes are not one-dimensional, either, with the option read they run which keeps our backers guessing. We don’t need a stop every drive. But we just need that ONE MORE PLAY. If Jaime Hill pulls out a plan to contain these guys, he deserves some coin.

    CAN’T WAIT CAN’T WAIT CAN’T WAIT!!!!
    Ki

Art Director, that was one of the funiest posts I’ve ever read on the internet. Ever.

Also, you have an issue with your google ads that you might want to address. Right now I have a big red ad for downloading Utah ringtones, complete wtih a picture of swoop, staring me in the face. That ain’t right. It’s at least the third time I’ve seen it.

I so can’t wait for Nov. 22. Got my ticket so I’ll be there to piss off every ute fan within earshot.

We have to be HUGE Aggie fans this Saturday. I don’t know if beating Utah will give us the catapault we need alone. We need some teams to lose, especially the ESPN darlings, BSU. Stinking Broncos.

I was hating the loss by TCU last night but quickly got over it and look forward to ripping Utah’s heart out.

    Hey Quinn,

Can I also ask Dustin Gabriel if he can straighten out either of his arms yet? It must suck for him, walking around the rest of his life with a tattoo of Quinton Ganther’s helmet in his chest. Or maybe I should ask you if Travis LaTendresse is still open in the north end zone (I don’t know if you were defending him that play, just a question for the BYU secondary in general).

I was thinking the same thing about the TCU game, and I’m glad they forgot they had Brown as a weapon. I’m also glad they remembered all of their weapons when they destroyed your cougs. Love the blog though….Go Utes!

  • CoachC said:

Is there a BYU blog that Ute troll has not invaded?

Gooch–Do you still work for KFAN? If so, Locke needs some serious therapy. Why does Larry H. Miller keep him employed? Are his ratings that good?

  • Alex said:

Whine all you want Quinn Gooch. Just don’t get your panties in a bundle in your own gooch when Utah dominates the Y even more than TCU did on the 22nd. BCS…. again. And another not-bcs year for BYU.

  • Quinn Gooch (author) said:

No Locke hasn’t called back after the first show. I guess I wasn’t boosting ratings as they would of hoped. Who knows maybe they’ll call next week??

Alex, I didn’t know I was whining. I was simply keeping it real, but as David Chappelle tells us, sometimes keeping it real goes wrong. The game will be good and I just enjoy being able to speak my mind. All those years holding my tongue are finally over.

If it makes the Utes feel better I get my plenty of BYU smack yapped at me by my beloved brother, who played basketball for the team up north. For some reason he just can’t shake his love affair with the Utes. But he was a closet BYU fan when I was playing. Hopefully there’s hope for his son.

  • CoachC said:

Gooch, I have completely quit listening to Utah talk radio, especially David Locke (not his real name). Just so people know, they have called me, if you can believe it. After talking to the program director, the agenda was clear, slam anything BYU, my job would be to analyze coaching decisions, defend the Utes (easy to do this year, so far) and promote the Jazz. If the fans are talking, the brass is happy. Its a formula that surveys and research shows will keep most who like that type of stuff, listening.

    But I digress.

I feel bad for TCU. It’s tough to watch the better team lose, especially with the stakes that high.

Let’s pray that Sakota gets injured the day before the BYU game… If that happens, the Cougars win in a blow-out. (Honestly, he’s all they got)

  • Jake said:

Mars, do you really need to route for players to get injured to believe your team can win?

  • Witt said:

Check it out, Brian Johnson just told Tom Kirkland that he’s “fully invested.” He was speaking about the rivalry but I thought it was an interesting choice of words.

  • Alex said:

Wait, your brother played bball for Utah? That’s news to me. Must have been tough on the family.
