Why am I not very excited for this week.

FergusonI don’t know what it is but the New Mexico game has lost it’s luster. I guess I remember the defining moments that intersected with games against New Mexico. This years showdown is lining up to be a BBB,BBBB,BB,Beating. BYU comes in healthy and hungry after rolling through Laramie with a blow torch. New Mexico, hasn’t had the best of luck since hiring a new staff, and with pending lawsuits -and bullish tactics on the women’s soccer field, it’s going to be a tough Saturday for the Lobo nation.

The Lobo offense and defense has been dismal this year as they’ve become the MWC whooping boy. It really makes me wonder if Rocky Long saw this train wreck coming and got out at the perfect moment. The one good thing about New Mexico’s current situation is the fact that Rocky Long went to SDSU and will hopefully help build their program into another MWC contender. A solid SDSU team will give the Mountain West four strong teams -with the AFA cadets providing a fifth team that can be dangerous, but man could they please find a way to finish off the Horned Frogs.

Writing about New Mexico is difficult. I almost feel bad for the University and it’s administration. They hire a coach that brings some Big Ten swagger and the next thing they know they are offering a battered assistant $500,000 to stop talking about their head coach’s MMA choke-out technique. It makes you wonder about the criterion the administration put forth when deciding on the new coach? I wonder if Spirit, Tradition, and Honor were discussed? How was the interviewing process handled and what types of questions were asked?

I also feel bad for the New Mexico players. Their out there taking beatings on the field, trying to perform and succeed while watching a three ring circus during the week. As a player that would be disheartening. A new coach is supposed to bring excitement and new life. He’s supposed to exemplify what your trying to accomplish as a team. Instead he’s duking it out with one of his hires, and then dealing with suspensions and lawsuits. All you can really do is shack your head.

I hope, BYU plays well because next weeks game won’t be a cake walk. Also, here’s to BYU, which is climbing back up the polls -almost back in the top 20, again. -If that isn’t a testament as to the program Bronco is running I don’t know what is. I not sure I’m looking towards yet another Las Vegas Bowl appearance. But, it will be interesting to see how the Pac-10 finalizes their year end standings and which team will be heading down to Sin City to play the Cougars. Whoever that team is could be a good match up for the Cougars -of course this is all pending a Utah win, I love how it always comes down to the Utah game…one way or another.

staff, this is off point, but my friend and I were talking about who makes the position changes on offence and defence during a game, between games, and who puts together the depth chart to begin the season? Who make the final decisions and who all are involved. A example: QB next year, who would evaluate and make the decision. How many coaches would be involved?
thanks, this is a great site.
    Go COUGS

I do like this game, maybe well see some players that havent been on the field much, get on the field and see what they can do. Hopefully, worst case senerio, this can be a good scrimmage before the last 2 games, I always enjoy when BYU gets ahead and lets other players get playing time. Its like watching BYU’s future. Even though is may seem disapointing to go to vegas again, its still impressive to go every year. How quickly we forget how bad things can get, off the field and on.
    Go cougs

isn’t it a pretty much foregone conclusion that the LV bowl will NOT pick BYU this year?

utah is going to lose to TCU and would be a great option. we’ll be going to San Diego…unless of course you know something the rest of us don’t.

It’s unfortunate what’s happened to UNM this year. What makes it more painful for them is that last year they seemed like a team that was just a few players short of being a good team. If they had a decent offense, they would’ve beaten Utah last year.

But I hope BYU doesn’t RSVP the invitation to the Lobos pity party. The Lobos are a team desperate for a win and are playing at home. A win against BYU will be huge for their program so they’ll probably pull out out all the stops. As long as the Cougars execute well and play their game, this game should be over by halftime. Of course that’s what I thought about the Aztec game.

    Gooch,

Why are you so sure of a Vegas Bowl appearance? Even if the season pans out as I suspect, TCU beats Utah, and BYU beats Utah, I still am under the impression that the Vegas Bowl will take the Utes, and Poinsetta Bowl will take the Cougs. I’d like more of your insight on this?

I’m also thinking that Utah will be in the Vegas Bowl as the 3rd place MWC team and BYU will be in the Poinsettia Bowl. And BYU’s opponent? None other than undefeated Boise St.! It happened last year when the match-up was MWC 2nd place team TCU and undefeated Boise St. Now that would be a bowl game to look forward to! It could happen and it’s starting to shake out that way. If Boise gets left out of the BCS, I think that’s the likely scenario.

I don’t know I just have a hard time believing that the Vegas Bowl would purposely snub BYU just because they’re tired of seeing them in Sin city espeically if they end up ranked #2 in the conference and TCU goes BCS busting. If Boise State ends up in the Poinsetta Bowl then I can see BYU bypassing Vegas for that game.

This game should be lopsided, but how many times have we seen a desperate underdog with nothing to lose give a superior team a loss or a close call. Every week we’ve had at least one big upset. Of course, it would take a miracle for UNM to do it, but the UNM coach needs a win very badly. For the players, this is their bowl game. These are D1 athletes. They just may be firing on all cylindars. They certainly should be mentally up for the contest. I was actually impressed with them first half of Utah game. BYU better beware, especially after the “near perfect execution” last week.

No let down – Go cougs! and Go TCU! (sorry, I want them to win out – don’t care about a tie for MWC championship)

oops – we need spell check on this site – “cylinders”

Yes, the Utah/TCU game is the storyline this week. Here’s hoping TCU lays a whoopin’ on the Utes, we follow suit and get to FINALLY face Boise St. in San Diiiaaaagggo.

I am in chicago this weekend and will watch the game on the sling box, at least part of it. This is the first UNM game I have missed personally attending in about 12 years. I always liked these games, they were usually hard fought tough games. My seats always sucked, and the crowd/fans at UNM use to be number 1 in my book (even above wyoming) until I went to Utah last year. I am with you, this game is sort of an after thought, probably because of UNM sucking and us having already been blown out in 2 games at home. I mean if we were undefeated going into this game I would probably be there. Hopefully we show up and blow them out. Looking forward to Air Force next week, which could be a very difficult game.

  • BYU vs. USC in LV? said:

I think the Las Vegas bowl is under contract with the MWC and Pac-10, so the highest-ranked MWC team not going to a BCS bowl game will square off against the #4 ranked Pac-10 team, as I understand it. Interestingly enough, BYU could end up facing USC in the Las Vegas bowl…if the voters quit ranking the undeserving Trojans so high.

Quinn – hope you have been more excited by the great special teams play that have helped push those kicks into the goal posts…..looks like the team was about as excited for this game as you were.

    Whew,
BYU was LUCKY to get out of town with a win….

3 field goals that hit the pole. Wow.
    That’s a 9 point swing,

Go TCU …. Run the table and make the conference proud…

  • Pizzaman said:

    PS ….True Blue
    awesome prediction…

  • WearBlue said:

    Pizzaman,
It was an extra point and 2 field goals that hit the uprights, but we blocked the 3rd missed field goal, which is a swing of 10 points. LUCKY is right!! Glad Jan stepped it up….
