Will a TCU win be the defining moment in this years season?

This year’s season has already been filled with a couple defining moments. Moments like the Washington field goal block and the UCLA blow-out have been the memorable pieces of a BCS puzzle. My question to you is, will this game be the moment in this 2008 season? Will we look back at this game as the moment BYU became a Top-5 team and program?

I think a win could be the turning point with the pollsters. It will solidify BYU as “the” BCS buster and once again push our team into the lime light.

For me the 2006 moments were the Boston College loss, the Utah win, and the Oregon beat down. In 2007, the most memorable game would again be the Utah game, the home win against a good TCU team -for different reasons- and the revenge game against UCLA. These games stick out in my mind as the special games in the past two 11 win seasons.

Tonight’s game has that special feel about it. Fans are a little nervous, the national press is taking notice, coaches are biting their nails, players are watching a few more hours of film, team meetings are quiet and focused, and walk-throughs aren’t a meaningless task. This game could be a kick start to a special journey that will end in Florida, Louisiana or possible Pasadena. It could be that game that we talk about for the next year. A great offense against a great defense, coach against coach, mascot against mascot, cheerleaders against cheerleaders. It has all the intangibles of a special game.

Will it be that moment? I think it will be and after it’s over and the dust has settled, we will understand what kind of team we have.

Last time I remember feeling this way was before the Utah game in 2006. We hadn’t beat them in 4 years and I felt it was time.

It’s time for the Cougars to step up and show a nation what this team’s all about.

Quinn, I sure hope you’re right on this one; I can’t afford to lose any more years off my life. I should start planning a Dallas trip every two years if it’s always going to be this good.

Man, to say I’m a little nervous is an understatement. And I’m not even a player.

I watched the TCU/Colodao St. game last night to see what their offense and defense were going to bring. I think there are holes in their defense, if we can pick up the endless amount of blitzing. If Max can read them right, we will eat them up.

I think our defense can shut down their run. But they might play a new QB too…but I still think we’re a better defense than their offense.

So if I get this nervous as a fan….I’m wondering how nervous did you get as a player? Did you just think, I’m prepared, bring it on? Or Oh man, what the heck are they going to throw at us, like Tulsa?

    Quinn,
I want to follow up on Kay’s question. Have you been to any games live this year? When I went to the Washington game I could not stand it! I was in the stands well before game time to watch warm-ups and my heart was going a million miles a minute, just like I was getting ready to play. Do you have those feelings before the games?

    ALSO A COMMENT

Although I still feel this game has lost a tiny bit of its luster with the QB situation I think this will be the first real test of how good our team really is. Washington was a weak team and we passed the test of “winning on a bad day,” but TCU with or w/o Dalton is a good team and is this guys opinion they are the best team we have played all year. After two weak performances I am anxious to see what game we bring to TCU. If we win this game it WILL be the defining moment of the season and will be great preparation for the showdown with the UTES.

I still get very excited for the game and I am very antsy in my seat. I also bite my nails like crazy. I used to only bite my nails during film sessions, but now I go to town on them during the game.
I still watch the games like a coach, I always see the problems and then figure out who messed up and how we can fix it. The funny thing is I only do it at BYU games. I can watch other games and just enjoy them but when the blue and white is on the field it’s all business.

When I played I wasn’t very nervous before games. Most of the time I was really prepared so I had a great deal of confidence in my abilities. I also knew how good our defense was and I could depend on the player around me to perform well.

Well, I know it’s crazy… but we live in Oregon, 12 hours away from Provo and we have season tickets. Yes, I have been to every home game so far, drive in on Friday, back home on Monday!

And yes, my heart was beating out of my chest before the UCLA game.

I guess maybe question is…it seems to me they came out a bit flat in the last two games. Is that because their hearts weren’t going a million miles a minute?

I agree this is definitely a defining game for us. I will be anxious to see the U/TCU game in Nov. too.

    Man, what a season!

Patterson announced that Dalton will start, so I don’t think the game loses any luster.

Gooch, I’d have to add one game to your ‘key games from 2006.’ The 2006 TCU game – in my mind – was one of the most important games for our program in a long time. Before we could beat Utah or Oregon, we needed to prove to ourselves that we could win a key game on the road against a very good defending conference champion. Granted, they lost confidence and kind of tanked after the game, but BYU really beat them up. That game still stands out as one of my all-time favorites for some reason. I’ll never forget that Nixon sack on the QB (Ballard?) for the fumble…

I just watched the ESPN review….they say TCU’s offense is better than our defense. Come on, cougars, prove them wrong! Now my hearts really racing!!

I have to totally agree with gordo. For me, the Utah wins were fantastic, the LV Bowl wins were great – but the 2006 TCU game really sticks out in my mind as the defining and most satisfying game of the past 7 years.

Up to that time the team played very inconsistent – looking great one week, then losing to a weak conference opponent at home the next. The TCU comeback in 2005 is probably the lowest point I remember in the past 3 years (other than the Utah win that year.) Up until the 2006 TCU game – they hadn’t beaten a decent opponent for a long stretch. The TCU game changed all that and helped restore that much needed confidence and swagger to the Cougs.

Don’t get me wrong – the Utah wins were unbelievable – but the TCU game was the confidence building catalyst that propelled the team the rest of that season and allowed them to be where they are today.

    Thoughts?

I have to agree on the 2006 TCU game. I remember thinking, wow, we did it, we beat the defending champs, we got this thing. Now to Utah…

    That was a sweet win.

  • Kay said:

Got that backwards…TCU’s defense is better than our offense. I guess we’ll see in a few hours.

BYU shows up for big games, we will be allright.

  • Jared said:

I think both BYU and TCU held things back last week. From what it sounds like TCU was really overlooking CSU last week. It’s going to come down to who wants it more. I’m not worried about the offense being able to put up points, but I hope our defense can get off the field a little quicker this week.

I lied, we had no chance in that game from the first drive! TCU made BYU look silly
