Wyoming forgot they played on Saturday.
That’s the only way could explain that one. Add in the fact that BYU’s offense looked very efficient. Max did a great job of spreading the ball around to different players. He also threw the ball on time and didn’t leave much time for the defensive line to get any pressure. Man, we missed this team last week. (But TCU is no WYO)
I was also impressed by the defenses tenacity throughout the game. They chased the Wyoming QB relentlessly and they put some big hits on ball carriers. That week off did the Cougars some good and hopefully they will keep the ball rolling as they move further into November.
Did anyone see the quarterback follow play with Riley in the late third quarter? Anae showed a few curve balls which will keep defenses guessing and it also means that defensive coordinators have to designate some portion of the week to defending the option. I like it.
It was a big blow out and the Cougars should move up a spot or two in the standing.
To Wyoming: Sorry you guys missed the game on Saturday, but somehow you fielded a team. As you can see, they didn’t do to well. Let’s try and remember that you play next week on Saturday. Not Friday, Thursday, or Sunday. Saturday!!

It’s always nice to see the guys beating the crap out of the other team once in a while. The team responded well after a devastating defeat to TCU. Let’s finish strong guys.
What a terrific game. Complete football on both sides of the ball. I really wanted to compliment the D. They were sensational today. Just like Quinn said, they were absolutely HOUNDING Wyoming’s QB.
Max was sensational, Unga was unstoppable, Jacobsen made his presence known with an 80 yd. BOMB, and Jorgensen! Welcome back to the headlines! You were killing out there. Awesome…
Enjoyed it thoroughly. Hope to see more of the same next week!
That game was sweet. Dear defense: welcome back. Please stick around for the rest of the season. A shutout? That is gravy.
Wyo looked like a small Utah HS team. Let’s be real.
Not a D one school. I personally don’t think they will ever be a powerhouse.
Thier coach even gave up on them. When BYU finishes 10-2 then we can put our chests out again. But let’s not over inflate the win against WYO….they are a poor at best team. I appreciate the W. And it is a start back on the right track.
Go Cougs
I can only attribute Wyoming’s goose egg to their bad uniforms. That’s the only legitimate explanation. You can’t wear a uniform like that and expect to win!! Luckily they were wearing their brown pants…
Dear Pizzaman,
Get that crap out of here.
Sincerely,

Drakos,
Who do u think u are?
I’m just expressing my opinion. If u can’t take a bid of honesty and objectivity then “U ? Get that crap out of here.”
BYU beak OK. Awesome, I want then to consistantly win the big game. Each and every time I get discusted with the gloating over minimal achievements. If you want to consistantly play on the big stage you gotta win the big games.
It’s only my opinion and I don’t subscribe to your “if your not one of us get out policy” in fact Brigham Young the orriginal was the one who brought diversity to UTAH.
10-2 is awesome but not in the bag yet. A lot to be done. If you can’t see that then you know and see little in the game.
Yes, Wyoming, New Mexico, SDSU etc are the bottom dwellers of the conference. But, Wyoming beat Tennessee just a year ago if I remember. They also put a “scare” into Utah.
I do subscribe to the attitude that ANY win deserves to be celebrated. I agree with Pizza it’s not really anything to stick the chest out over. But, it was a fun game to listen to and I can assure you that our future opponents have taken notice and will be pumped to play us.
So, when we beat New Mexico and Air Force over the next couple of weeks, I’ll celebrate. And when we beat Utah the following week, I’ll celebrate. And, anyone want to guess what I’m going to do after our bowl win? Celebrate AND stick my chest out.
With Riley’s playing time and experience this year I have yet to be impressed with his throwing ability – yet he threw for quite a bit his freshman year at Utah St. It’s too early to talk QB race for next year (even though we’ve been talking about it for 1-2 years already), but that is going to be one INTERESTING story line.
The more I see what our coaches don’t do with Nelson, the more I worry about next year. I don’t think Nelson has enough of an arm to be a QB in Anae’s offense. If he becomes our starter, I expect we play a very different type of game than our history has brought us to expect. He looks like a small, weak armed, Doman. Don’t get me wrong, Doman was great as a senior. Doman as a Sophomore or Junior was better at wide-out. If Nelson doesn’t have more than we’ve seen, we are in for a world of hurt if he starts for us next year.
Coaches obviously haven’t turned Riley Nelson loose yet. If they had it would have looked to be running up the score, and remember that when he’s been in it has also been with the second team offense. I have no worries about his arm. Sure it may not be his strongest asset but he has other skills that make up for that. I saw him throw some nice passes on the run in summer practice. It’s going to be fun to have a QB that is a run threat.
If Nelson doesn’t get the job it’ll mean there’s someone that’s better and that’s a great problem to have. Personally I hope if he gets beat out we still work him to change things up at times, although I know BYU coaches aren’t too keen on doing that.
Hey, we were hoping for trick plays. But this game just showed that when things are working right, every play is a trick play. Anae had Wyo on their heels the whole game. They never knew what was coming next.
It was just great to see an aggressive BYU team with a real game plan. The coaches were finally prepared for this one and it was very noticable. Both offensively and defensively BYU did things to counteract what the opponent does well. I wish we saw this against TCU or FSU when we were so clearly out coached.
The best thing that I saw was the aggressiveness on defense. IMO, this doesn’t come from the players as much as it did from a change in scheme. This game plan seemed to be all about pressure and it made the players bring more intensity and aggressiveness. When a defense is constantly dropping seven into coverage and playing a conservative zone, the players get passive. They worry about assignments and if they are in the right place. You could clearly see how much better our CBs are when they can play instinctively. When we bring 6 people on a blitz and put pressure on the QB then our defenders know that they have to do their jobs and execute at a high level for 3 or 4 seconds. They react better and play instictively as opposed to playing on their heals with an opposing QB who has all the time in the world.
So it was nice to see BYU be unpredictable for a change. It was nice to see aggressive play calling. Of course it helped that we were playing Wyoming, but they do have a good defense. As a BYU fan, I just liked that we saw some new wrinkles and more aggressiveness from our coaches.
Pizza,
Sorry if I struck the wrong cord. I certainly don’t want to see this blog turn into the type where people are belittling each other because they expressed their opinion. The timing of your comment was just after a couple of people had just called in on the Cougar Call In Show and just wanted to complain. My point is, notwithstanding the win was against Wyoming, it was still encouraging to see. Shutting out a division 1 team is always an accomplishment. Especially at their house. That Wyoming team has some ability. As mentioned in other posts, they put up a good fight against Utah and don’t forget, they almost held the lead against Texas going into the half.
Drakos
Speaking of Riley, I don’t know why the coaches won’t just throw him in a few times a game to run the Wildcat or the option. It’s a great distraction to throw at an opponent. One more thing for them to prepare for.
I think Riley throwing when we are up 52-0 would look real bad. Every time he had a delay-scramble, it looked like he was going to pass, but I think he never was allowed to. It looked like a clock-milking tactic.
Drakos, I admire your class in apologizing to Pizzaman. Pizzaman, I actually agree with your first post. But your spelling is unreadable. Try typing your posts in Word to spellcheck and copy/paste in this page. Horrific.

I’m 6-4 240, my hands don’t fit well on the i phone keyboard very well, deepest of appologies, however, some of the words used in the post were mis-spelled with intention.
About Riley, Steve Young was able to make a living out of no pass, run when coverage was too tight.
Rileys arm will gain strength. I love the QB run, and QB follow.
BYU has always made the shorter passes it’s bread and butter. So deep routes are not a huge problem. Many of the plays Saturday were designed draws and I’m sure Riley had the red light unless he was totally sure of the pass.
My 2 pennies worth..
I’ve noticed that when we have some extra time to prepare that we come out better. We started with the oklahoma game and we came out well and after a bye week we have a shutout. I was wondering if you just thought this was a coincedence or what. Your thoughts Quin?
Thanks Marc. My gut reaction was to blast back, but that would not have been the appropriate response.
Loved the pressure D! Worked against Oklahoma, when we used it against TCU it worked too, and clearly vs WYO.
Yes, it worked against TCU. Early in 2nd half, TCU had two 3rd and long plays, both a result of blitzing on earlier downs. We blitzed on both of these 3rd and longs. Both passes fell incomplete, however our D was called for a personal foul on one and a PI on the other. They proceeded to score.
Point is, all the talk I’ve heard about “we don’t have the athletes to blitz” is ridiculous. The only time we did slow TCU, ignoring those penalties, was with pressure. And it clearly had the WYO QB running for his life.
Leave your response!
